Preparation of Fungal Mycelium-Based Biocomposites for Footwear
Original language description
Footwear manufacturing consumes diverse materials, including leather, textile, thermoplasticrubber, polyvinyl chloride, synthetic plastic, and polymeric materials, leading to a substantiallynegative impact on the environment and social issues. Contemporarily, bio-based design synthesishas shown several opportunities as an alternative to sustainable composite materials. The salientgoal of this current research framework is to develop a biodegradable fungal myceliumbiocomposite to act as a shoe sole component. In this study, fungal mycelium composites synthesiswas evaluated up to 5 days of incubation time at 30ºC and 60% relative humidity in the presenceof locally available lignocellulosic organic waste solid substrates: leaves of Magnolia Kobus,Vibrant Green Grass, Tulip, Red Oak and saw dust of Beech wood, using the fungal strain:Ganoderma lucidum. A compact, dense network of hyphae (pure mycelium mat) was observedafter the stated incubation time. Filamentous hypha binds the lignocellulosic substrates as a naturalglue and convert this organic waste into lightweight bio-composite. Here, it is understandable thatthe fabricated composite is a biodegradable composite material because the binder and bindingsubstrate are sourced from natural materials. In addition, from the application point of view asshoe sole water absorption, swelling thickness, moisture exposure, compressive strength, andwater repellency were investigated, including the hypha and substrate fiber microstructuralinteraction. This paper will report about preparation and characterization of fungal myceliumbased biocomposites which will explore opportunities for biodegradable footwear inputs, as wellas an emphasis on the importance of using materials in footwear manufacturing that have an endof-life option
