Yugoslav tourists in the Czechoslovak spas during the interwar period (1918-1939)

  • Original language description

This study explores the overlooked phenomenon of Yugoslav tourists in Czechoslovak spas during the interwar period, employing archival research, travelogues, and contemporary periodicals. Based on the mentioned sources and through the lens of the history and sociology of tourism, the paper presents the research results related to the development of spa tourism in Czechoslovakia, the broader cultural, political, and economic context of the circumstances influencing the interest of Yugoslav tourists in Czechoslovakian spas, the accessibility of travel and stay in Czech spas for Yugoslav tourists, as well as the intercultural dimension of reasons for tourist travel between Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia. Based on these results, it can be concluded that, despite favorable political and cultural circumstances, the economic factor represented the greatest obstacle to a more significant influx of Yugoslav tourists to Czechoslovakian spas. In this sense, it is noticeable that only members of the elite classes of Yugoslav society could afford visits to Czechoslovakian spas. However, even among this population, it is possible to observe that after an increase in interest during the 1920s, there was a decline in interest during the 1930s due to the Great Depression. Furthermore, the paper points out that a certain number of Yugoslav tourists visited Czechoslovakian spas due to a desire to better understand other Slavic cultures, with such trends actively encouraged by proponents of Pan-Slavism.
