The Role of a Historic Silver Mining Legacy in Destination Management: A Generational Comparison
Original language description
This paper examines generational differences in the perception of Jihlava’s mining heritage and its relevance for contemporary tourism development. Situated in the Czech Republic, Jihlava is a historic city whose identity is closely tied to silver mining, particularly during the medieval period when it was one of the most important mining centres in Central Europe. Despite the historical significance of this legacy, its potential for tourism promotion and destination branding remains only partially realised in the city’s current strategic efforts. Drawing on data from a broader research project conducted among the city’s residents in 2024, the study focuses on two distinct age cohorts - adolescents and older adults - who represent contrasting stages of life experience and cultural memory. The analysis concentrates on selected survey responses that explore participants’ level of historical awareness, their personal engagement with the city’s mining narrative, and their attitudes toward the role this heritage could play in shaping Jihlava’s tourism offer and broader cultural image. The findings reveal that the mining heritage resonates more strongly with the older generation, who regard it as a meaningful component of local identity and a valuable tourism asset. In contrast, younger respondents appear less engaged with this historical narrative and more uncertain about its relevance for tourism promotion. These findings suggest that destination management efforts in historic cities may benefit from more nuanced, age-sensitive communication strategies that bridge generational perspectives while reinforcing cultural continuity.
