The European Commission's 35-point action plan aims to bolster inland waterway transport (IWT) and aligns with climate goals, focusing on transitioning more cargo to rivers and facilitating zero-emission vessel adoption by 2050. Slovakia's initiatives underscore improving services on the Danube and Vah waterways, enhancing navigability, modernizing ports, and promoting alternative fuels. Achieving carbon-neutral transport requires embracing low-carbon or carbon-neutral fuels. The Rhenish Commission's roadmap evaluates alternative fuels based on emission reduction potential and technological readiness, highlighting LNG and hydrogenated vegetable oils as promising options. In assessing alternative fuels, it's crucial to consider their broader impact beyond CO2 savings, including public health implications. This holistic approach ensures a comprehensive strategy towards decarbonization.
