Circulating Histone Profiles Discriminate Heart Failure Patients With Preserved Versus Reduced Ejection Fraction

  • Original language description

Heart failure (HF) is a heterogeneous disease, encompassing a wide range of symptoms. Treatment for HF patients with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) lack efficacy for HF patients with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). Moreover, HFpEF and HFrEF present different etiologies and comorbidities. The diagnosis of HFpEF remains a challenge, with score-based algorithms showing varying diagnostic performance. Furthermore, levels of BNP and/or NT-proBNP are below detection threshold in approximately 20% of the HFpEF patients. Circulating histones, released in the blood upon cell death, recently emerged as robust biomarkers of inflammation and stroke, but their diagnostic role in HF remains unknown.
