Industrial Town and its Transformations in the 20th Century: the Culture, Identity and System of Urban Industrial Society as Exemplified by the “Ideal Town” of Zlín

Anotace anglicky

The project comprises applied research focused on the phenomenon of the industrial town and its transformations in the course of the 20th century. Several types of interconnected project outputs will make it possible to understand, preserve and pass on an important part of Czech cultural heritage to the next generation. The project will focus on changing economic, cultural, and political contexts, from the point of view of ordinary citizens and employees. The project team – consisting of professionals from the fields of history, sociology, architecture, urbanism, design, cartography, and didactics – will study and document the transformations of a modern industrial town, using the town of Zlín/Gottwaldov as an illustrative case. The town’s well-defined area, and the close connection between the town’s development and its industrial plant will enable us to analyse the dynamics of the growth of the city in the course of the classic industrial period, as well as during the later de-industrialisation period after 1989. The apparent uniqueness of the entrepreneurial system of Zlín will also be investigated in the context of other towns with Baťa plants, as well as with other industrial centres both in Czechoslovakia and abroad, among them, first of all, the “company towns” of North America. Comparison will also be made with the construction process in the USSR and with the construction of industrial towns in so-called Eastern-bloc countries after 1948. The main project outputs are designed for the general public and will be of use to state and regional authorities. They are: exhibitions with professional catalogues; topographic processing of urban and social development; didactic and preservationist methodologies; radiobroadcasting programmes; a multimedia website; applications for mobile devices. The project is expected to enter into academic discussions through professional papers, conferences, and an interdisciplinary monograph.

Projekt nedosáhl stanovených cílů, splnil jen 1 z 8 plánovaných hlavních výsledků projektu (tj. 12,5 %) a byl hodnocen jako neúspěšný a s výhradou k Závěrečné zprávě, kde jsou nadbytečně popisovány pracovněprávní spory a nedostatečně kroky NTM při hledání nového týmu.
