Establishing the Chronology of the First Great Eurasian Ice Sheets

The growth and decay of vast ice sheets in the Northern Hemisphere are a defining feature of the past few million years of Earth’s history. But when did these great ice sheets first arise and why? The dynamics of ice sheets matters to all because climate, sea level, and global ice are fundamentally linked in ways that we must understand in today’s changing climate system. For the first time, we will resolve the timing of the first large-scale Eurasian Ice Sheets (EIS), and thereby test the hypothesis that the development of the great Northern Hemisphere ice sheets coincided with the global shift from 41,000 to 100,000-year glacial cycles about 1-million years ago (the Middle Pleistocene Transition). To achieve this goal, we will apply new tools based on terrestrial cosmogenic nuclides to date the EIS deposits at locations along its former limits. By establishing a new glacial chronology, we will finally unite the glacial stratigraphic frameworks of western and eastern Europe, thereby resolving decades of correlation uncertainty.
