Taxonomists around the world are facing unprecedented unwillingness of funding bodies to support their research. Projects are rejected because of their descriptive character without giving reasons why descriptive research is wrong, unimportant or unwanted. This is hard to understand considering the fact that human-induced changes to Earth’s ecosystems result, among others, to accelerated species extinctions and some species extinct before they are scientifically recorded and named. Therefore, we believe that descriptive science, such as taxonomical studies, should be supported. The proposed project aims at the plant genus Thismia (Thismiaceae) in Borneo and Sumatra. We are aware of eight undescribed species of Thismia from these islands that are threatened by habitat destruction and therefore they might become extinct in the near future without being properly described. We aim to collect and describe all these eight species. We also aim to rediscover another five currently missing species from both islands and shed light on phylogenetic relationships of all thirteen species.
