Electrochemical System Marine-Based Remediation and Advanced CO₂ Efficient Removal

  • Annotation in Czech

EMBRACE project general goal is to develop scalable, marine-compatible electrochemical systems for CO₂ removal, aimed at enhancing ocean health and supporting blue carbon ecosystems to foster long-term climate resilience. Specific objectives are: 1. To design and synthesize a new generation of LDH-based electrocatalysts optimized for CO₂ removal under seawater conditions. 2. To establish electrode fabrication protocols and electrochemical tests, with precise control over LDH structure, composition, and interfacial properties. 3. To assess the chronic ecotoxicological impacts of the developed materials and systems in marine environments, ensuring negligible toxicity levels. 4. To elucidate the reaction mechanisms involved in electrochemical CO₂ reduction reactions in marine electrolytes. 5. To integrate electrochemical CO₂ conversion systems with blue carbon ecosystem processes, aiming to enhance ecological co-benefits such as nutrient (N and P) and organic micropollutant reduction, and support overall ocean health. 6. To validate the performance and environmental effectiveness of modular electrochemical reactor prototypes under real marine conditions. 7. To ensure long-term durability, environmental resilience, and scalability of the developed systems, by limiting catalyst degradation and maintaining biofouling resistance.
