Two climate issues, one solution: Bacterial physiology for combined methane and nitrous oxide mitigation

  • Annotation in Czech

Aerobic methanotrophs typically use oxygen (O2) as an electron acceptor when oxidizing methane (CH4). Recent research indicates these organisms can continue methane oxidation even under hypoxic or anoxic conditions. They accomplish this by rewiring their metabolism and switching to alternative electron acceptors when O2 is absent. By using nitrous oxide (N2O) for respiration, some methanotrophs can simultaneously lower the levels of two potent greenhouse gases (GHGs). The simultaneous usage of CH4 and N2O in methanotrophs has received little scientific attention despite its significant environmental implications. Moreover, we have gathered indications that the current prevailing perception of methanotrophs performing anaerobic CH4 oxidation coupled with N2O reduction (AMNR) as a phylogenetically narrow group with limited ecological impact is likely heavily biased by the scarcity of cultured methanotrophs with such metabolic capabilities. We propose to explore the potential for combined CH4 and N2O removal by newly cultured strains and in a natural environment.
