Molecular characterization and phylogeny of the symbiotic protists of corals

Project goals

Protists of the phylum Apicomplexa represent one of the most important parasites of human beings and animals. Although these organisms are parasitic and heterotrophic, their cell possesses a complex plastid (apicoplast). This plastid is not photosynthetic, however, it is essential for the parasite survival. The origin of the apicoplast is a subject of controversy. The acquisiton of the plastid by engulfing the red alga during the process of secondary endosymbiosis is the most accepted scenario. This project is aimed to study evolutionary history of a new line of photosynthetic symbiotic protists from corals through molecular characterization of their organellar genomes. Preliminary phylogenetic analyses suggest a possibility that these protists represent the closest photosynthetic relatives of apicomplexan parasites.

Molekulární charakterizace a fylogeneze symbiotických prvoků z korálů

  • Annotation in Czech

Prvoci kmene Apicomplexa představují jedny z nejdůležitějších parazitů člověka a zvířat.

Many parasitic Apicomplexa, such as Plasmodium falciparum and Toxoplasma gondii contain an unpigmented chloroplast remnant termed the apicoplast, which is a prospective target for treatment of malaria and other diseases caused by apicomplexan parasites,
