    Decoding the Role of Female Reproductive Fluids in Freshwater Fish Fertilization

    General concepts explaining post-mating processes in external fertilizers still require a deeper understanding of the involved mechanisms. This research project focuses on the role of female reproductive fluids (FRFs) in mediating post-mating gametes’ interactions, specifically sperm competition and cryptic female choice in the freshwater fishes. Our study aims to elucidate how the characteristics of FRF contribute to fertilization success by modulating sperm motility. Using artificial fertilization experiments and comprehensive physiological and molecular biology methods, the project will examine the components of FRFs modulating sperm motility and causing different fertilization outcomes in several freshwater fish species. The project seeks to understand the intricate mechanisms underlying reproductive strategies and adaptations in aquatic organisms. The findings are expected to have implications for ecological applications, biodiversity conservation, and the study of reproductive biology in various aquatic environments.
