    Laying the foundations of the first digital twin of a volcanic plumbing system

    Our objective is to use the approach of complex system science to build the first integrated and interconnected model of volcanic plumbing systems. Volcanoes are underlaid by a complex network of magmatic bodies, sills, and dykes. In such complex systems, behaviours emerge from non-linear interactions between the different components. We propose to explore those emergent behaviours by building a graph that models volcanic plumbing systems as a networks of nodes and links. To reach our objective, we will (1) build a database of characteristics of volcanic plumbing systems to provide input for the graph; (2) develop new mathematical and numerical models of the magma bodies that are the nodes of the systems and of their interactions with dykes that are the links; (3) build the graph and explore how the topology of the magmatic network affects the pattern of volcanic activity. We aim at using the graph as a digital twin to model case studies and test conceptual models. It will be then made available to the community for further developments, and for research and education applications.
