Parallel evolution of plant clonality: mechanisms and constraints

  • Annotation in Czech

Clonality is the ability to produce several independent rooting units from one parental plant. It occurs in about half of all plant species and evolutionary shifts from clonality and back are common. This pattern may be driven by costs and benefits of clonal multiplication, which can change across environmental gradients. Clonal plants are known to occupy different and wider ecological niches than non-clonal plants. As the selective forces behind this pattern are poorly understood, we propose to investigate the ecological and evolutionary drivers of clonality on three interconnected levels: (i) correlated evolution of clonality and species environmental niche in four plant families; (ii) modeling costs and benefits of clonal vs. nonclonal strategies across environmental gradients; and (iii) using genomic and transcriptomic approaches to investigate the role of genes involved in horizontal growth as a candidate mechanism behind the evolutionary flexibility of clonality. Linking these three approaches will provide a more definitive answer on drivers of evolution of clonality in plants.
