Soil nitrogen cycling as affected by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi

  • Annotation in Czech

Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi establish symbiotic association with majority of extant plant species of Earth, including most of the major crops (rice, wheat, maize, potato etc). In agricultural plant production, nitrogen (N) is often the primary nutrient limitation. The role of AM symbiosis in N uptake by crops and in soil N cycling is still poorly known, in contrast to their well established role in phosphorus and zinc acquisition by plants. This proposed project shall comprehensively and using direct isotopic labeling and tracing address the gaps in knowledge about which and how efficiently are the different soluble N forms taken up by the AM fungal hyphae from the soil solution. Further, it will provide detailed insights into AM fungal influence on soil N cycling processes and key microbial players in them, across a variety of soil conditions including soil N availabilities and forms of N supply. This will be achieved by combining stable isotopic tools with DNA and RNA metabarcoding and meta-transcriptomics targeting indigenous and experimentally manipulated soil microbiomes.
