The Dynamic Interplay of Germ Cells and Somatic Cells Lineages in Gonadal Tissue Regeneration in Fish

  • Annotation in Czech

Among vertebrates, fish stand out as excellent models to study regeneration. Our preliminary data demonstrate that the gonad can fully regenerate after an injury. This opens an exciting avenue towards tackling fertility issues originating from traumas or pathological condition causing permanent gonadal tissue loss due to inability to regenerate. First, it is necessary to characterize the regenerative process and its main components. It remains unclear whether regeneration recapitulates normal gonadal development or whether injury triggers alternative mechanisms, such as germ cell dedifferentiation or the activation of somatic gonadal cells. Partial gonadectomy will be used to induce regeneration in zebrafish and killifish followed by transcriptomics, loss-of-function experiments, and cell ablation, allowing us to dissect the processes facilitating successful regeneration. The goal is to identify pathways regulating regeneration after an injury. Ultimately, we aim to provide novel insights into gonadal biology, with potential implications for regenerative and fertility science.
