The Stellar Initial Mass Function of Dense Stellar Systems and their Supermassive Black Holes
Annotation in Czech
The stellar initial mass function (IMF), i.e. the distribution of the initial masses of stars when they form, constitutes a fundamental function in astrophysics and cosmology. The IMF is the key to our knowledge of the baryonic matter content in the Universe because it is made to shine through stars. The physical conditions in the early Universe, in star-bursting galaxies, near our Sun and in the far-outer regions of our Milky Way, define what type of stars form there. In turn the formed stars affect their surroundings. We need to understand the mapping between the physical conditions and the IMF to comprehend galaxy formation and evolution. Today we understand that large concentrations of gas are dominated by short-lived massive stars, while regions with low gas density are dominated by long-lived low mass stars. The luminosity field and chemical enrichment therefore critically depend on the history of star formation and on how the IMF varies. This project will build upon our previous experience using new data to improve knowledge of the variation of the IMF.
