Magnesium silicate hydrates with alternative silicon dioxide sources: innovative, eco-friendly and 3D printable construction materials

  • Annotation in Czech

The project investigates MgO-SiO2 binder modified by alternative sources of silicon dioxide, such as by-products from the combustion of coal, biomass, sewage sludge, municipal waste, ground ceramics, or natural reactive sources. It aims to minimize the carbon footprint and environmental impact of construction composites while using circular economy principles. To satisfy the current industrial needs, the materials will be designed to be 3D printable, so the proposed research includes fillers and additives for improving the workability, rheology, pumpability, and buildability of the designed materials. The experimental analysis covers fresh composite mixture preparation, study of hydration and setting kinetics, and detailed studies of hardened materials focusing on microstructure, chemical relations, mineralogical composition, mechanical parameters, and durability, including leachability of hazardous substances. The comprehensive approach offers innovative, sustainable alternatives to environment-burdening Portland cement-based materials.
