    Exploring the Unexpected: Advancing Accreting Black Hole Studies in the X-ray Polarimetry Era

    This project addresses important unresolved issues in the field of X-ray polarization, focusing on black hole X-ray binaries and radio-quiet active galactic nuclei. Recent observations have revealed, for the very first time, unusually high levels of polarization that are not explained by current models. The models either fail to produce the higher polarization, or they predict polarization directions orthogonal to what is observed. Additionally, there is a general lack of advanced computational models that incorporate sources of polarization (Comptonization and reflection), limiting our potential of understanding the complex physical processes at play. By developing novel models and leveraging unique observational data, this project promises to significantly advance our understanding of physics in the regime of strong gravitational fields. The project’s broad applicability, our extensive international collaboration, innovative modelling approaches and our proven ability to provide essential tools make the project a high-impact initiative for the X-ray scientific community.
