The project critically investigates how Slovak art was represented, interpreted, and institutionalized within the Czech lands during Czechoslovakia’s interwar and World War II periods (1918–1945). It explores how visual art labelled as “Slovak” both shaped and was shaped by Czech perceptions, contributing to cultural hierarchies within the shared state. The research challenges established national narratives by examining the intertwined nature of Czech and Slovak artistic identities, focusing on mechanisms of representation, artistic exchange, and institutional mediation. It analyses how exhibitions, criticism, institutional policies, and periodicals mediated Slovak artistic identity and examines asymmetries in cultural exchange. Incorporating perspectives from border regions and previously overlooked actors, it employs innovative theoretical approaches such as inter-imperiality, creolization, and translocality. Ultimately, it offers a nuanced framework applicable to other contexts marked by similar cultural negotiations.
