Web crippling failure mechanism of cold formed steel sections

Web crippling in cold-formed steel sections is a localized failure due to concentrated loads causing excessive deformation or buckling, typically at supports. With increasing demand on steel saving and higher use of cold-formed steel for primary structures and for spanning larger distances, understanding web crippling is crucial. Design procedures rely on empirical equations from experimental studies, originating from AISI 1968 and other standards. Despite improvements, current methods remain overly conservative. This project aims to develop an analytical yield line model for web crippling in single- and multi-web sections (trapezoidal sheeting, Zeds and lipped channels) and better understanding to the web crippling phenomena. Additionally, the tests and numerical models generated during the project will be used for re-calibration of the Eurocode empirical design formulas and recommendations for cold-formed steel web crippling design assisted by FE analysis.
