Stable isotope ratios of dissolved organic hydrogen along Taiwan’s mountain-to-sea gradients
Annotation in Czech
Dissolved organic matter (DOM) represents the largest exchangeable carbon reservoir in the oceans, and its relative persistence can influence ecological food webs and carbon cycling on short- and long-term temporal scales. Rivers transport terrestrial DOM into the oceans, where certain compounds resist immediate oxidation by bacterial and photochemical processes. Contributions of terrestrial DOM into open waters have traditionally been assessed via changes in bulk properties (e.g., color, stable carbon isotopes) or using terrestrial plant biomarkers (e.g., lignins). However, traditional methods can be hampered by dilution effects once terrestrial waters mix with open waters. To better inform ecological and biogeochemical models, the stable isotopes of hydrogen in ambient water and DOM can be used to identify nonexchangeable molecular fingerprints in organic matter unique to the originating environment. Using hydrogen isotopes and high-resolution mass spectrometry, this project will constrain the relative contributions of terrestrial DOM into the open ocean off of northern Taiwan.
