Optimisation of clinker melt for sustainable cement production (OptiMelt)

  • Annotation in Czech

The project will improve understanding of the properties of clinker melts and their effects on phase assemblage and reactivity. To achieve this, we will apply state-of-the-art methods and approaches to influence the melt formation and characterise its properties. In WP1, we will systematically vary the clinker melt consisting of C3A and C4AF by adjusting the A/F ratio and adding dopants. This investigation will provide insights into the temperature, viscosity and surface tension of the melt. The optimised melt (OptiMelt) is most likely the one with low formation temperature and optimised viscosity. Several of these melts will then be used in WP 2 to produce clinkers with lower firing temperatures but high reactivity (high alite content). Further optimisation of the clinker melt may be necessary. In WP 3, we will test the OptiMelt clinkers in combination with supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) such as calcined clays and recycled concrete fines. This approach will allow us to explore the potential of melt optimisation for sustainable and highly reactive clinker production.
