Critical phenomena in evolutionary ecology of butterflies

The project will focus on three little explored phenomena in evolutionary ecology of butterflies (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea): evolution of myrmecophily in Lycaenidae, evolution of ranges, biotope association and migratory habits in the genus Colias (Pieridae), and cladistic biogeography of a highly diverse and predominately mountain genus Erebia (Nymphalidae: Satyrinae). It will use diverse array of methods, including constructing of original phylogenetic hypotheses, vicariance analyses and mapping ecological traits onto phylogenetic trees, as well as mark-recapture studies and allozyme analyses of selected species and populations.

Project results evaluation
That was prepared phylogenetic hypothesis of the Glaucopsyche section, Lycaenidae. Studies of critically endangered representatives of Colias, Erebia and Phengaris species pointed to a crucial role of habitat heterogeneity for population survival.
