Genetic structure and differentiation among populations of Barbatula barbatula and Cobitis elongatoides: implication for Danube river system biogeography

Project goals

The distribution and genetic population structure of most species were greatly affected by the climatic cycles during Pleistocene glaciations. Populations surviving ice ages in southern or central Europe served as sources for reinvasion during the interglacial times. Few studies investigated the colonization pattern in freshwater systems in Europe. Nevertheless, there is a persisting disagreement according to the investigated fish species. The proposed project suggests to compare colonisation strategiesof two species occurring in the same river system but inhabiting different parts of the river stretch. Results will reveal the genetic diversity and population structure of both species and should help to understand the evolutionary process that led tothe present distribution of fish gene pools in one of the main river systems of Europe. Obtained information could be useful in elucidating between recent and more ancient evolutionary events that have promoted species diversification.

Genetická štruktúra a diferenciácia populácií druhov Barbatula barbatula a Cobitis elongatoides: biogeografia riečneho systému Dunaja

  • Annotation in Czech

Výsledky odhalia genetickú diverzitu a populačnú štruktúru oboch druhov a prispejú k pochopeniu evolučných procesov, ktoré viedli k súčasnej distribúcii genofondu rybích populácií jedného z najvýznamnejších riečnych systémov Európy.

Genetic diversifications of the cold-adapted rheophilic fish species was promoted by the Tertiary geologic events, while the Pleistocene glaciations had an inverse effect and have caused the expansion and homogenisation of populations in the lowlands.
