Population genetic structure in two European endemics, the European ground squirrel and the garden dormouse: a comparison of fragmented versus continuous populations
Project goals
Proposed project deals with the population genetic structure of fragmented and isolated populations in two European endemics, the European ground squirrel (Spermophilus citellus) and the garden dormouse (Eliomys quercinus). Aim of the project is to estimate the level of population genetic structuring of the scattered populations from the Czech Republic and to compare them with more continuous and abundant populations from other parts of Europe. To investigate population genetic structure of both species, neutral and adaptive variability will be analysed, i.e. microsatellite loci vs. MHC genes. Comparison of population genetic structure using neutral and selected loci can provide information about the type of selection working on the genes of immune system (local adaptation vs. balancing selection) and can help to suggestions about the conservation strategy.

Project name in Czech
Population genetic structure in two European endemics, the European ground squirrel and the garden dormouse: a comparison of fragmented versus continuous populations
Annotation in Czech
Navrhovaný projekt se zabývá populačně genetickou strukturou fragmentovaných a izolovaných populací dvou mizejících druhů, sysla obecného (Spermophilus citellus) a plcha zahradního (Eliomys quercinus). Cílem projektu bude porovnání vybraných genetickýchparametrů populací z území České republiky s populacemi z těch částí areálu, kde mají oba druhy souvislejší rozšíření a dosahují vyšších populačních početností. Pro studium genetické struktury populací obou druhů bude analyzována neutrální a adaptivní variabilita, tj. mikrosatelity versus geny hlavního histokompatibilního komplexu (MHC). Získané výsledky budou mít praktickou aplikaci pro ochranu studovaných druhů.

Project results evaluation
New original knowledge about two disappearing species, the European ground squirrel, S. citellus and the garden dormouse, E. quercinus, were gained using field sampling, as well as population genetic, phylogeographical and parasitological approaches.
