In this project, we have identified unique secretion pathway occurring in mitochondria of several eukaryotic lineages. It likely represents the remainder of the original bacterial pathway, which was retained in these mitochondria for so far unknown reasons. The presence of the pathway is of special interest becauseof the nature of the interaction between mitochondria and the rest of the cell during the creation of this crucuial organelle of the eukaryotic cell.
