Diagnostic methods and control measures of viruses causing dwarf diseases and their vectors in cereal crops.

Project goals

The molecular methods of diagnosis and genetic diversity of virus diseases in cereal crops, the ecology of their vectors and protection measures against them will be investigated in the proposed project. The research will focus on: 1) the development andadaptation of molecular methods for reliable detection and identification of genetic diversity of Wheat dwarf virus (WDV), Barley yellow dwarf viruses (BYDVs), Barley mild mosaic virus (BaMMV) and Barley yellow mosaic virus (BaYMV), 2) the ecology, abundance and control measures against vectors, leafhopper Psammotettix alienus (for WDV)and aphids (for BYDVs), 3) the identification of resistance sources in wild species of Triticeae against WDV, 4) the evaluation of resistance status in winter wheat andbarley cultivars against WDV, 5) the assessment of resistance status in cultivars and breeding lines of wheat/barley/oat against BYDV strain MAV, and 6) the identification of Czech isolates of Polymyxa graminis and their transmission efficiency of BaMMV

  • Project results evaluation

The project aim was to prepare reliable and sensitive methods of molecular diagnostics of economically significant viruses of cereals. To clarify the ecology of carriers of these viruses and propose a protection system against them. To find resistance sources and designate the resistance of varieties of cereals against these viruses. Individual objectives were fulfilled.
