Composite Crack Growth Stopperes Design and Optimization

  • Original language description

In the recent time there are many all-metal aircraft designed for limited life. The life is limited by its fatigue for this type of the structure. So our aim is to extend the life for low reparation costs. To repair the fatigue crack on the thin wall aircraft structures we can use the riveted patches made from aluminium sheet. This way of the reparation has one big disadvantage; you have to drill another set of holes into the structure. A hole from this set can initiate another fatigue cracks. The The disadvantage can be reduced, but not completely avoided, by utilisation of special fasteners. The second way how to repair the damaged region is to use an adhesive system instead of riveting. In this case is better to employ a patch made from fibre composite. The main objective of the composite patch design and optimisation is to reduce the stress concentrations in the adhesive, which is the weakest part of the system aluminium sheet-adhesive-composite patch.
