Heterochromatin condensation in central and peripheral nuclear regions of maturing lymphocytes in the peripheral blood of patients suffering from B chronic lymphotic leukemia: a cytochemical study

  • Original language description

Computer image processing and DNA image densitmetry indicated that the heterochromatin condensation in the cntral gene rich nuclear region preceded that in the nuclear gene poor periphery at the nuclear membrane. Thus, the maturation of leukemic lymphocytes is characterized by a marked heterochromatin condensation in the nuclear periphery regardless of the cytostatic treatment. On the other hand, the larger persistence of the heterochromatin condensation in the nuclear central region in some small mature lymphocytes. Such phenomenon might represent the return of these cells to the cell cycle or just a further appearance of the maturation asynchrony of the leukemic cell.
