Deletion of the long arm but not the 5q31 region of chromosome 5 in myeloid malignancies

  • Original language description

Deletion of the long arm of chromosome 5 is a recurrent cytogenetic abnormality that is frequently found in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The proximal commonly deleted region CDR in the 5q31.2 region has been detectedin MDS, AML and therapy-related MDS/AML. The distal CDR in the 5q32-q33 region is involved in the pathogenesis of 5q- syndrome. Using molecular cytogenetic techniques, we identified an atypical 5q deletion with retained CDRs in three patients with myeloid diseases. To our knowledge, this is the first report describing 5q14-q23 deletions as the only abnormalities in MDS/AML patients.
