Gel baits have become the most important insecticide formulations employed for control of the German cockroach. The knowledge on bait properties is essential for their effective and safe use. The increasing speed of action (i) increases bait potential toeliminate populations quickly and to substitute insecticide sprays safely; (ii) decreases bait potential for secondary kill; and (iii) increases the risk of food contamination by dead bodies of quickly paralyzed cockroaches. This paper presents the results of laboratory tests on the speed of action against German cockroaches of 10 commercial gel baits containing the major classes of active ingredi- ents currently used. Three main groups of baits were recognized: I) Rapid action baits (NT 50 lt; 2 hours): imidacloprid - PROFICID ACTIVE, (chlorpyrifos) - KARATOX TURBO (1.2%), beta-cypermethrin - SCHABEN-GEL), II).
