Biological characteristics of an atrazine resistant common groundsel (Senecio vulgaris L.) biotype and molecular basis of the resistance
Original language description
The atrazine resistance of Senecio vulgaris was identified by both the Hill reaction acitivity and atrazine treatment. A region of the gene encoding Dl protein of Photosystem II was sequenced and compared between the resistant and susceptible biotypes. Resistance to atrazine in the S. vulgaris biotype was conferred by a glycine for serine substitution at residue 264 of the D1 protein. The maximum germination rate was achieved in 4 days (20 and 30 °C) and 9 days (10 °C) respectively. Significant difference in germination was found just between the susceptible biotype at 20 °C and resistant biotype at 10 °C. The effect of biotype and depth of sowing on the emergence of plants were investigated. The only significant factor was the depth of sowing.
