Varroa destructor parasitism has a greater effect on proteome changes than the deformed wing virus and activates TGF-beta signaling pathways
Original language description
This study shows by proteomics approach molecular mechanisms of the impact of (i) Varroa destructor parasitism, (ii) deformed wing virus (DWV) clinical signs, and (iii) the interaction of Varroa and DWV, on honeybee. The developmental stage of honey bee was emerging worker. Multiple markers indicate that Varroa activates TGF-beta-induced pathways to suppress wound healing and the immune response of host and that the collective action of stressors Varroa and DWV intensifies these effects on the total proteome changes of honey bee. Markers for future research are provided. Results are important for understanding colony losses and also describe the biology of the parasite Varroa and its tightly associated pathogen DWV.
