Application of amniotic membrane in osteoarthritis management
Original language description
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a prevalent degenerative joint disease characterized by articular cartilage degradation, inflammation, and pain. The current treatment options for OA are limited in their ability to provide long-term relief and restore joint function. However, recent advances in regenerative medicine have led to the exploration of alternative therapeutic strategies, including the application of amniotic membrane (AM) in OA management. AM has emerged as a promising therapeutic option due to its unique properties and regenerative potential, although the mechanism of action of AM in OA is not fully elucidated. Here, we discuss the anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and regenerative properties of AM that make it an attractive candidate for OA treatment. Preclinical studies utilizing animal models have demonstrated the ability of AM to promote cartilage repair, reduce inflammation, and improve joint function. Clinical trials evaluating the safety and efficacy of AM-based therapies in OA patients have also shown promising results, with improvements in pain relief and functional outcomes. In conclusion, while AM shows promise for OA anagement, additional studies and clinical trials are necessary to fully understand its therapeutic potential and establish it as a safe and effective treatment option for individuals with OA.
