Developing a Czech-English online legal dictionary for court translators and legal professionals

  • Original language description

Following rapid technological developments, the need for online legal dictionaries has increased. Czech translators and legal professionals still rely on a decades-old printed Czech-English legal dictionary, despite the major reform of Czech private law in 2012 through the Civil Code, the Business Corporations Act, and the Private International Law Act, which substantially altered civil-law terminology. This shift has not yet been reflected in legal lexicography.Charles University offers a course for court translators focused on Czech law and English legal terminology. Its participants-and others translating continental legal concepts into the language of common law-would benefit from an online Czech-English dictionary that incorporates the terminology introduced by the 2012 reform and uses the advantages of a digital format to improve translation quality. This study presents findings from an initiative at the Department of Foreign Languages, Charles University, aimed at developing such an online dictionary. The project is based on a needs analysis conducted among 73 participants in the court translators course.
