    Translation Mining Workshop

  • Original language description

The event consisted of three parts. In the introductory lecture, the invited international guest presented the mining method and examples of contrastive linguistic research that had already been carried out using this method. This was followed by two three-hour workshops. In the first workshop, the speaker provided a hands-on introduction to the translation mining method using his own training data, and the participants learned to apply the method on their own computers (in the RStudio environment). The speaker also drew attention to several methodological pitfalls of this approach. In the second workshop, participants applied the method in practice to their own multilingual data, which had been prepared within the OP JAK project Converbs in seven European languages. This made it possible to gain insight into how these languages express adverbial meanings and what position these forms occupy in the linguistic system and in the mental lexicon of adult speakers. Both the introductory lecture and the workshops were open to the wider linguistic community, but the second workshop was specifically targeted at research conducted within Activity 2C.Participants acquired a method that is key to the implementation of Activity 2C, and at present they already have access to the first outputs, namely semantic maps of the distribution of converbs in the pilot data.
