Andrej Babiš as a Populist Leader: Media Framing of the Czech Presidential Elections 2023

  • Original language description

Leadership, as a concept within political science, has not received adequateacademic scrutiny. Leaders play a pivotal role in politics, wielding either formal authorityderived from their institutional positions or informal authority, such as charisma. The latter isoften associated with populist leaders. This paper examines how news media in the CzechRepublic frame the concept of populist leadership, with a specific focus on Andrej Babiš, theformer prime minister and a prominent populist figure. Babiš's populist leadership ischaracterized by a technocratic, catch-all approach. The analysis is grounded in framingtheory, which asserts that media coverage influences public opinion by framing issues inspecific ways. The study combines quantitative content analysis with aspects ofpragmalinguistics to investigate how Czech news media (Seznam Zprávy, Novinky.cz andiDnes.cz) constructed the notion of populist leadership during the hot phase of thepresidential elections in the Czech Republic in 2023. It builds on media framing theory andworks with both generic and issue-specific frames. The results based on the analysis of 859articles (news, comments and interviews) confirm the opportunistic nature of Andrej Babiš'scareer with a generic "strategic-game frame" and issue-specific "warmonger frame" being themost used when informing about Babiš during the chosen period.
