The Condition of Theolinguistic Research in the Czech Republic

  • Original language description

The study presents the first, more or less comprehensive, look at the history and present of scientific research on the Czech religious language. The specifics of cultural-historical and political development (the significant distance of Czech intellectuals from religion since the second half of the 19th century and, above all, the exceptionally strong repressive approach towards churches and religion by the communist regime in the years 1948-1989) has resulted in very little specialized research on religious language. Researchers (since the times of Josef Dobrovský) have been paying most attention to the issue of Czech Bible translations. The tradition of translating the Bible into the vernacular language in the Czech lands is very old (the first Czech translation of the entire Bible dates back to the middle of the 14th century) and very rich. Research and publications on other (non-biblical) topics related to religious language are still rather rare in the Czech environment.
