Consciousness as Multi-dimensional Temporal Integration
Original language description
This analysis introduces the theoretical attempt for understanding consciousness through a synthesis through the synthesis of integrated information theory and three-dimensional temporal physics. Here, consciousness is defined as the integration of information across three orthogonal temporal dimensions. Apart from previous one-dimensional temporal approaches, including Rulin’s work on ordered thought patterns, this attempt offers a mathematical structure that shows how consciousness may maintain coherence across different timescales. The analysis extends integrated information theory (Φ) to incorporate the three-dimensional temporal structure, yielding several contributions: (1) a topological formulation of persistent identity despite physical change, (2) a short-term wave function representation of consciousness across multiple temporal dimensions and (3) testable predictions regarding temporal integration in neural-like systems. This approach combines scientific materialism with cultural conceptions of consciousness by pointing out how complex informational integration across multiple temporal dimensions may create properties culturally associated with the “consciousness” like existence without requiring non-physical substances. While building upon established information-theoretical approaches to consciousness, our three-dimensional temporal framework represents a reconceptualization rather than an incremental extension of existing theories.
