Background: Recreational sports activity is one of the most important elements in young people's lives. This activity, also known as "sport for all", is directly connected with practicing sport in the free time. Objective: The purpose of the study is to analyze some important aspects of recreational sports activities of the pupils from Germany and Poland. The study shows the importance of selected elements of sports activity for the school youth considering gender and nationality. Methods: Two research methods were applied in this study. In order to measure individual motives for actively engaging in sports, the original German version of the standardized questionnaire as well as a questionnaire of attitudes and behaviors towards sports activities. Altogether, 682 persons, at the age of 18 (M=18.54+-0.32 years) from Germany (348 persons) and Poland (334 persons) participated in the research. Results and conclusions: The most important motives of the sports activity of the pupils are relaxation, health and fitness. The boys prefer risk and ascetic experience and the girls aesthetic experience. The favorite leisure activities of the youth, regardless of the nationality and gender, is meeting friends. Practicing sport is most important for German male students. The youth is physically very active, which is reflected in the high frequency of doing sport and the large number of kinds of sport. It depends on the gender and nationality. The most played sports by boys is football, but by German female students it is cycling and by Polish female students it is volleyball. The majority of all respondents evaluates positive the possibilities for practicing sport in the place of residence and wants to practice sport after finishing school.
