Influence of sensorymotor cortical area damage on spine development

  • Original language description

In experimental study the spine development in growing rats following pinealectomy and sensorymotor cortical area damage was evaluated. 46 rats (aged from 3-5 weeks) were operated. In 22 of them pinealectomy was performed, in 24 rats sensorymotor area 2x1x1 mm of the cerebral cortex on the left side was removed. Scoliosis was found in 22,7%, the mean scoliosis value was 10,8 degrees in the pinealectomy group. In the cortical area damage group the scoliosis was found in 33,3%, the mean value of scoliosiswas 15,9 degrees. The unilateral cortical damage may cause scoliosis as a disorder of balance between the inhibitory and facilitating areas of central nervous system. Thus the hypothesis of balance impairment caused by different unilateral diseases or disorders of central nervous system was formed. Predominance of facilitating areas results in dorsal paravertebral muscular tone differences and scoliosis development.
