C-peptide affects glyoxalase 1 level in proximal tubular cells in vitro
Original language description
Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is the most common cause of end-stage renal disease. Therapeutic strategy to prevent DKD progression involves compensation of diabetes and control of blood pressure, lipids and other metabolic parameters. However, even strict control does not have to be efficient enough. Glyoxalase system with enzyme glyoxalase I (GLO-1) is considered a protective pathway as it eliminates reactive aldehyde methylglyoxal that is involved in the development of DKD. C-peptide which has been long considered as an inert molecule, gained attention recently as it shows favourable effect on molecular and organ level in diabetes. It was shown to increase activity and expression of several antioxidants and it improved renal parameters in animal experiments. The aim of the in vitro experiment was to study the effect of C-peptide on GLO-1.
