Artistic Reciprocity between Venice and Salerno in the Thirteenth Century
Original language description
Herbert L. Kessler in the main body of the text explores the consistency between the atrium mosaics of San Marco in Venice and the mosaics from Salerno Duomo, both created in the thirteenth century. Dependently, on many particular examples, he proves their congeniality and shows how the models from the Cotton Genesis (a greek manuscript, 5th century) were used in San Marco’s atrium and reflected in the mosaics of Salerno. The Salerno ivory plaques are also pointed out - they were probably used for completion the scenes of the Genesis mosaics in San Marco’s atrium, where the Cotton Genesis had missing parts. The article also deals with complex meanings of iconography in San Marco’s atrium and Salerno Duomo.
