The introductory chapter to this collection of works about the mosaic decoration in the atrium of San Marco in Venice, summarizes the most important existing researches, opinions and knowledge from leading scientists, and outlines the main content of the book. In the first part of the chapter, we are provided with a brief history of the Cotton Genesis, related exemples for comparison and the main studies about this manuscript and their conclusions. In the second part, this historiographic approach is focused mainly at mosaics of the atrium of San Marco. Herbert L. Kessler presents here the results of the works of his colleagues as well as his own discoveries concerning the Cotton Genesis and the atrium of San Marco.
