Thirteenth-Century Venetian Revisions of the Cotton Genesis Cycle
Original language description
In this article Herbert L. Kessler examines the close relationship between the thirteenth-century mosaics of atrium in San Marco in Venice and their main source, the fifth-century Cotton Genesis. As a result of the cooperation and publication with Kurt Weitzmann along with many years of his own research, Kessler submits this detailed study about the iconography and patterns of San Marco's atrium mosaics. The final part of the text describes a function of these mosaics, reasons behind selecting the particular scenes from Genesis and their coherent meaning for citizens and public space of Venezia.
