From the General of the Scottish Army to a Fattish Beer-Drinker: a Short History of Czech Translations of Macbeth

  • Original language description

This chapter outlines a critical history of Czech translations of William Shakespeare's tragedy Macbeth, from the anonymous prose reworking of 1782, through K.H. Thám's 1786 translation, the romantic translations of J.J. Kolár and Jakub Malý, the art nouveau version by J.V. Sládek, the avantgarde experiments of Bohumil Štěpánek, through to the late 20th-century versions by O.F. Babler, E.A. Saudek, František Nevrla, Václav Renč, Milan Lukeš, Martin Hilský and Jiří Josek. The chapter contextualises individual translations and publishes so far unknown archival facts.
