Loanwords in Mongolian Riddles about Buddhism

This presentation, part of an ongoing research into Mongolian riddles, will focus on riddles on the topic of Buddhism included in the three major collections Mongol ardin onisogo tavaar [Enigmas and Puzzles of Mongolia], Lovor and Ölziixutag 1990; Tümen onisogo [Ten Thousand Riddles Vols. 1 & 2 ], Ölziixutag 2013; and Ordos aman zoxiolin comirlog (Textes Oraux Ordos), Mostaert 2010. Loanwords to be found in this subset of riddles include terms from Tibetan, Sanskrit, Chinese, Uyghur, and Sogdian, used in a wide contextual range, including anthropomorphized mantra fragments, humorous images of Buddhist clergy, but also religious terms (e.g., sümber < Sanskrit sumeru) employed outside of a strictly 'Buddhist' framework, including deification of the landscape and the Mongolian ger (yurt) and its objects within. In this presentation, I will examine some of these loanwords and their use in the riddle corpus, including loanwords that in the course of oral transmission can be said to have become 'eroded' and therefore more difficult to identify. These loanwords bear testimony to the rich history of the contacts of Mongolian with the surrounding and culturally important languages.
