    Türkiye-U.S.-EU Triangle : A European Perspective on Turkish-American Relations

  • Original language description

The geopolitical triangle comprising Türkiye, the United States, and the European Union (EU) represents a complex and dynamic tapestry of relations that significant regional and global shifts have historically shaped. This chapter seeks to unpack the major dynamics driving the relations within this triangle, focusing on the evolving defense and security interactions between these actors. In light of recent geopolitical developments, particularly Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, this analysis gains an added layer of urgency and relevance. Traditionally, the United States has viewed Türkiye as a pivotal ally in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) alliance, crucial for maintaining regional stability in the Middle East, and as a buffer against Soviet and later Russian influence. This relationship, however, is undergoing significant changes, particularly with Türkiye’s decreasing dependence on U.S. military hardware. This shift signifies a growing desire for autonomy in Türkiye’s defense policy and presents new challenges and opportunities for U.S.-Türkiye relations.
