    Schisandra chinensis is native in East Asia, but several attempts to cultivate this plant under European climatic conditions have been made. The friuts and seeds are used for tonic purposes and as a stimulant in Oriental medicine. The biologically activecompounds are the lignans which are compounds with an uncommon structure derived from dibenzo[a,c]cyclooctadiene. The major lignans are schizandrin, gomisin A, gomisin N and wuweizisu C: The lignans of S.chinensis prevent liver injuries induced by somehepatotoxic chemicals, stimulate liver regeneration after partial hepatectonomy, and also inhibit hepatocarcino-genesis and lipid peroxidation in rats. Micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography (MECC) has been used for the analysis of the Schisandra extract. Separation conditions have been optimised with respect to different parameters including pH and ion strength of the background electrolyte, SDS concentration, acetonitrile concentration (% v/v) and temperature.
